Its a Balancing Act: Photography, Nursing, & Life
Most of you may already know, but in addition to photography, I am also a full time licensed nurse, and a licensed foster parent. Some days, it is easy to balance all three, but most days its nothing short of a miracle, really strong coffee, and some nice wine.
As a nurse, some of my work days are long. I can have a 9 hour work day, followed by a 1 hour long photography session, and then come home to help with dinner, bath time, and bedtime stories for the kiddo. It is not always easy, but it is worth it. I think the thing that helps is that I genuinely enjoy doing these things, so sometimes the time flies by and I don’t even notice.
Another thing that helps, is having a clear schedule. I used to be the type of person that hated calendars. I thought I could just remember everything that I needed to know. But then you don’t, and that’s just not a good feeling. So I now have a calendar that I use to help me keep track of important work meetings, photography appointments and even doctor appointments, so that I don’t accidently overbook myself.
Another thing that is helpful, is having days when you slow down or just relax. I am definitely the type of person that wants to always go, go, go until I can’t anymore. The thing is, you can’t pour from an empty cup. You need to give yourself time to relax and fill up the gas tank. Something that has helped me with this, is scheduling times where I am not doing anything. I usually pencil them into my schedule as, “Nope. Not doing it.” And when I see that on my calendar, I know that I am not working, doing any photoshoots, or making any new appointments. It is not easy for me to do, but I know it is necessary if I want to continue to do this long term.
I hope this was helpful, and gave you a small look into my life.
